Wedding dress expert reveals which bridal dress fabric to choose

Organza wedding dress

Choosing your wedding dress is often the most exciting part of the wedding planning process, and deciding which gown to choose can be a daunting task. Wedding dress specialist and owner of Pound A Metre, Shadmaan Kadeer, unveils the benefits of the nine most popular wedding dress fabrics. Shadmaan says, "Organza holds a structured silhouette, while being lightweight and sheer, making it the ideal choice for summer and warm-weather wedding dresses. The material is traditionally woven from silk allowing it to have a sheer and sharp finish. This material is often used to create drapes, trails and outer layers of a wedding gown for a whimsical, princess-like, romantic dress."

Silk satin is another popular choice. Shadmaan says, "This is one of the most popular bridal materials due to its durability and shiny, silk-like finish. Satin fabric can be purchased in many varieties to allow the material to be suitable for weddings in all seasons. Duchess satin has a thicker composition making it perfect for cooler month weddings while traditional silk satin is perfect for summer weddings thanks to its lightweight nature. Satin is a perfect fabric for creating ruched or ball gown-style dresses due to its moldability and easy-to-handle characteristics."

Chiffon is one of the lighter bridal gown materials allowing it to be used for overlays and layers. Shadmaan tell us, "Its sheer and transparent style makes it a popular choice for veils, dress tails and focused features on a dress. Made from rayon or woven silk, the matted material is light and airy making it perfect for spring and summer weddings. Silk chiffon's light and airy structure also makes for floaty and spiritual vibes for bohemian brides."

Crepe is another good option. Shadmaan points out, "It's a crinkled fabric made from soft silk or lightweight rayon, making it an ideal wedding dress fabric for those wanting a soft silhouette. The shaping material can be used to create or accentuate curves, but can also be used to create minimalist bridal dresses and even jumpsuits. Crepe fabric could be used to create the ever-popular mermaid style or A-line dress because of its sophistication and all-year-round suitability."

Lace is by far the most popular wedding dress fabric. "Wedding dress lace fabric is extremely versatile in texture, pattern, weight and embellishment making it ideal for the creation of all elements of a dress," says Shaadman. "It's is delicate, feminine, luxurious, and flexible enough to make any shape or structure. Woven from silk or cotton, the lace material comes in a variety of styles allowing it to be used to create bridal fashion for every season."

Tulle wedding dress fabric has a sheer, open weave that's similar to netting, creating an airy yet romantic and mysterious vibe. The material is delicate and often chosen for a gown's lining or under-layer, and veils. Shaadman tells us, "This lightweight and inexpensive fabric is picked for illusion and barely there elements of a dress and can be worn year-round due to its lightweight nature."

Synthetic and cost-effective, polyester can be chosen for any clothing style but increasingly it is being used in wedding dress styles due to its versatility. Shaadman says, "Polyester satin is a common alternative to silk as it has a lower cost whilst remaining wrinkle-resistant and durable. Although the material has reduced breathability, it is an ideal bridal fabric for cooler months and outdoor weddings."

Velvet is a soft, thick and felted wedding dress fabric making it suitable for all autumn and winter weddings. "This grand fabric is most commonly used for brides who want a vintage and luxurious look on their wedding day," says Shaadman.

Last but definitely not least, when it comes to silk, it's one of the most traditional wedding dress fabrics. Shadmaan tells us, "Silk is both versatile and timeless. Silk fabric is suitable for all seasons due to its lightweight yet delicate nature and composition. The material is made of spun thread and then woven together to create this distinguished fabric with a muted shine."
